El ingenuo Joey Tribbiani abandona Nueva York y a sus amigos para trasladarse a Hollywood en busca de su sueño dorado: convertirse en un actor de renombre. Tribbiani deja atrás un tiempo en el que los amigos eran su familia para iniciar una nueva etapa en la que su familia son sus amigos.
Tras reencontrarse con su hermana Gina, peluquera y mujer de armas tomar, acaba adoptando a su sobrino de 20 años -Gina le tuvo cuando tenía 14 pero es un secreto de familia-, como nuevo compañero de apartamento.
Michael, algo tímido e inseguro, no sabe cómo escapar de las faldas de su madre, una mujer demasiado sexy para ser su madre. Acaba de graduarse y es un auténtico científico en potencia que irá aprendiendo poco a poco las habilidades sociales de su tío Joey, convertido ahora en su mejor amigo.
El equipo lo completa Bobbie una mujer de carácter variable que hará las veces de representante, dirigiendo de forma poco peculiar la futura carrera de Joey.
